Pura Vida in Costa Rica
I’m not sure why it took me so long to visit this beautiful country but it was definitely worth the wait. If you are looking for a place to unwind and relax, this should be on the top of your list. If like myself, you enjoy some adventure, Costa Rica offers that as well. Surfing, biking, zip-lining, hiking, and horseback riding are some of activities that you can find here.
I spent 14 days in Costa Rica and had plenty of time to explore the Caribbean side and the Pacific as well. Here are some of my favorite places:
If you happen to stop at San Jose…
To be honest, there isn’t a lot to do in San Jose but since it was my first time in Costa Rica I decided to stop at the capital and get to know the area. Below are some of my favorite spots.
Hotel:
Sheraton in Escazu
Food & Drinks:
Either Escazu or Barrio Escalante has some great options for restaurants and bars. Below are some of the places that I enjoyed.
Pocket: This bar is located in Escazu and it’s literally in a parking lot, so it really doesn’t look like anything special from the outside but you are in for a great surprise. They make amazing cocktails, play great music and the whole staff was so friendly. If you enjoy scotch as I do make sure you order a “Penicilina”.
Isolina: This cute little restaurant located in Barrio Escalante had great ambiance and delicious food! They had a great outdoor patio with a great wine menu, if you are in San Jose I definitely suggest you check this place out.
The Sheraton in Escazu actually has a great rooftop with a great view of the city, there is also a Casino at the hotel which was one of the only places open until late.
Puerto Viejo:
Located in the Caribbean side, this area is not as developed as the Pacific area of the country, so be prepared to make reservations ahead of time since there aren’t that many hotels in the area. Chill and authentic are the two words that come to my mind when I think of Puerto Viejo. Get your camera ready to capture the beauty of nature, surfers by the beach and don’t forget to look up to spot a sloth.
Favorite Late Night Spot:
Hot Rocks! Live music and it’s open until late.

Favorite Restaurants:
Mopri (Downtown Puerto Viejo) This place serves some of the best seafood in Puerto Viejo, you won’t regret it!
Maxis in Manzanillo, you can get an amazing fried red snapper, Caribbean style.
Arenal Volcano
If you are looking to completely unwind and relax, then head to Arenal. This is the ultimate retreat to connect with nature and completely unplug yourself from the day to day.
Yoga, zip-lining, horseback riding, hikes and hot springs are some of the things that you can enjoy at this place. If you are lucky enough to get a clear view of the volcano you are in for a treat!
Best Hot Springs in Arenal:
Tabacon
Ecotermales
Guanacaste
This tropical paradise is located in the northwestern region of the country along the coast of the pacific Ocean. The area is way more developed than the Caribbean side of the country, so it’s easier to find better options for accommodations. I booked a great Airbnb by the beach but make sure you book ahead, since this is a popular destination during high season (November - April).
I’m a sucker for a sunset so I have to say that this place stole my heart with its beautiful sunsets.
Favorite Beaches:
Playa Danta ( Las Catalinas)
Playa Flamingo
Playa Dantita (Las Catalinas)
Playa Conchal
Besides from the people, and the sunsets, my favorite part of Costa Rica was the variety of Ecosystems that you can experience from town to town. From the jungle to the beach, to the beach to the mountain, you won’t be disappointed.
